Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with Janine Jansen and Dudamel/LA Phil 10/7/11

October 10, 2011

I have accompanied this Mendelssohn Violin Concerto for competitions, juries, masterclass, and concerts for MANY many times. So I usually avoid listening this piece. Thanks to my friend, she invited me to go to LA Phils’ subscription concert of all Mendelssohn program on 10/6/11.  Besides violin concerto Hegrides Overture and Symphony No. 3 were on the program. I was very impressed by Janine Jansen’s refreshing interpretation of this well-performed piece. She plays with an amazing beautiful tone, never pushed. This piece can be too pushy and aggressive, but her music making was elegant and warm. She takes concerto as chamber music. She seemed trying to blend in the orchestra, and to exchange ideas with the instruments in the orchestra. I was so glad to hear this NEW Mendelssohn violin Concerto. (In Japan this piece is called Men-Con. Of course Dvorzak Cello Concerto is called Dovo-Con!) Refreshing! Amazingly Dedamel conducted a concerto by memory! The rest of the program was sun-shine and happy. After the long hours of teaching I spent wonderful time listening Mendelssohn, and chatting with my friend (not during the concert–!).
